The first season takes place in the present day and follows the story of the Harmon family, who move into a restored mansion, unaware that the home is haunted by its former inhabitants. The second season, titled American Horror Story: Asylum, takes place in 1964 and follows the stories of the patients, doctors and nuns who occupy an institution for the criminally insane.

The series is broadcast on the cable television channel FX in the United States. The first season premiered on October 5, 2011, and concluded on December 21, 2011. The second season premiered on October 17, 2012.

American Horror Story has been well received by television critics and fans. The cast has been generally praised, particularly Jessica Lange. The series draws consistently high ratings for the FX network, with its first season being the biggest new cable series of 2011.

Season 1

The theme of the first season is infidelity. The story takes place in 2011 and follows the Harmon family: psychiatrist Ben (Dylan McDermott), his wife Vivien (Connie Britton) and their teenage daughter Violet (Taissa Farmiga), who move from Boston to Los Angeles after Vivien gives birth to a stillborn baby and Ben has an affair. The Harmons move into a restored mansion and soon encounter the home's former residents, the Langdons: Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange) and her two children, Tate (Evan Peters) and Addie (Jamie Brewer), and the disfigured Larry Harvey (Denis O'Hare). Ben and Vivien try to rekindle their relationship, as Violet, suffering from depression, finds comfort with Tate. The Langdons and Larry frequently influence the Harmons' lives, as the family discovers that the home is haunted by the ghosts of its former inhabitants.

Verhaal

American Horror Story is bedacht door Ryan Murphy, de man die ook verantwoordelijk was voor Nip/Tuck en ... Glee, wat in deze context echter geen referentie is. Het verhaal heeft alles van een doorsnee horroprent in het genre van Japanse horrorfilms als The Ring en The Grudge, maar niets is wat het lijkt, American Horror Story is veel meer dan dat. 

Het knappe aan AHS is dat het uitgangspunt redelijk simpel is. De uitwerking is echter complex en vanaf de eerste afleveringen vraag je je af hoe alles nu precies in elkaar zit, want je ziet dingen die je niet meteen kunt plaatsen. Geleidelijk aan worden er hints gegeven die alles in een juist perspectief plaatsen. Daarnaast is ook de vormgeving erg sterk: knappe sfeervolle fotografie, een zeer goede montage en decors die niks dan sfeer uitademen om nog maar te zwijgen over de speciale effecten die ook sterk zijn. De serie, gecatalogeerd onder de noemer miniserie (omdat dit een afgerond geheel is dat geen verlengde krijgt in een tweede seizoen), kreeg 17 nominaties voor een Emmy, meteen het hoogste aantal ooit door een miniserie gescoord. In de rolverdeling herkennen filmliefhebbers vast en zeker Dylan McDermott als Ben en Jessica Lange als buurvrouw Constance Langdon die zich ontfermt over Violet die met een depressie zit. Lange kreeg ondertussen een Golden Globe voor haar vertolking. De rol van Vivien wordt gespeeld door Connie Britton uit Friday Night Lights.

Het tweede seizoen van American Horror Story is ondertussen gestart, hoewel we er direct moeten aan toevoegen dat het niet meer met de Harmons is en dat het ook niet meer plaatsvindt in Los Angeles. In het tweede seizoen, waarin wel veel acteurs opnieuw meespelen - zij het in andere rollen - speelt alles zich af in een creepy asylum. Dat belooft!
